Week 11

This week Team Kereru has been busy.

During maths we have been making ginger beer.  We have been using a practical activity to learn about litres and millilitres.  We had to start by making a bug.  We made this with yeast, sugar, warm water and ginger.  We had to feed it each day for 7 days with 1 teaspoon of sugar and 1 teaspoon of ginger.   On Monday we put all the rest of the ingredients in and put our ginger beer into bottles.  It will be ready on Monday the 28th of April.  We all hope it works and that our ginger beer has bubbles and tastes good.

In writing we have written up all about of process of ginger beer making.  Have a look at these on our individual blogs.  During the last 2 weeks we have also been working on writing using the writing burger, (introduction, all the details and then the conclusion).  This process is really important for all writing genres.

In reading we have been reading biographies about famous New Zealanders.  We started with Burt Munro.  Did you know that he only changed his name from Bert to Burt when it was spelt wrong in a newspaper article in the United States?

Our afternoon has been taken up with singing practise for our up and coming production and inquiry work around our school’s logo, vision, values and motto.

This week I have spent time loading our mini iPads with apps for our learning.  Mrs Coyle and Team Kahu have been an amazing help.  The Team Kahu kids taught four  members of our Team to Blog- then our ‘experts’ taught another 4 members, very soon we will have a class of expert iPad bloggers.  Maybe we will be able  to teach Team Tui.  We are very thankful to the Home and School and also to all the school donations that we have received to enable us to purchase iPads.

Our website of the week is http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/   this is a learning website that we have used for Maths in particular, but there are many other activities that you can go on to do with other subject areas.
