Maths in Team Kereru

In maths at the moment we are learning about multiplication and what this means and looks like.  We have been using the white boards and blocks to show what the problem is.
We have learnt that the x sign means groups of, lots of, repeated addition and lots of other things.  When we found this out we could solve multiplication problems.  6x2 is 6 groups of 2 or could be written as 2+2+2+2+2+2.

Week 6 Team Kereru

Team Kereru are an amazing bunch of highly energetic, hardworking and goal driven learners.

In writing we have been exploring explanations.  We are writing explanations about life cycles. So far we have looked at frogs and sea turtles.  Our learning blogs have many wonderful examples of these. We will move into writing reports during the next couple of weeks.

In reading we have been learning about a new app on our iPad.  This app is called ‘Shadow Puppet’ and the task we had was to retell the legend Maui and the Sun.  Some of the results from this app look amazing and are slowly being updated onto individual blogs.  We have also been working on triramas about space (see your child’s blog).   We will continue to use apps that are appropriate to our learning in reading and learn the new ways we can find and present information.

Our inquiry has us buzzing, we have been learning about the different stars that there are in the whole universe and are trying to comprehend the size of these. Did you know that a super-giant star is about the size of our solar system? On Thursday the Space Dome came and we learnt a lot during their time here.  I can’t wait to see what the children choose to explore for their own research.

Our website of the week is http://www.space.com/  it is a fantastic informative and engaging website.

Aeroplane maths

Today in maths we made seats in aeroplanes to show multiplication and the different ways we can make a number.

Week 5

Kia Ora all

We have all enjoyed the sunshine this week.  We made the most of it and drew around our shadows every hour on Tuesday.  Our shadows were longer in the morning and in the afternoon.  In the morning one of the shadows was 15m long.
I wonder what different a summers day will make?  I also wonder if there are shadows on the other planets?

During our writing time we have been writing explanations about sea turtles.  What an amazing  creature.  Did you know that they have been around for 150 million years?

In reading I have been very busy checking on the children's progress in reading by doing running records.

In maths we will continue working on 2D and 3D shapes, and will spend some time on measurement.

We are all waiting for the space Dome to come next week and are excited about what we may be learning about.

Remember to keep checking out the Maths @ Edendale blog and using the learning games to help your maths learning.

Have a great week everyone.
